This homework assignment contains both individual and group work. This assignment will be graded based on each individuals own write up of the three parts of the assignment, as well as setting up the assigned computer according to the directions.
Group Exercise - As a group, determine the hardware configuration of the machine that has been assigned. Write up a brief summary of the specifications. As a group, investigate and decide what version(s) of Microsoft Windows™ could be installed on this hardware (Windows 95, 98, 2000 Pro or XP Pro) Prepare to install the most recent version that the hardware will support. Use the textbook and other resources to create a basic checklist (4-10 items) of the steps necessary to install your chosen version of Windows™ on this PC.
Group Exercise - Install the OS version that your group has chosen. Obtain the Installation Media from your instructor, (which may include floppy disks and/or CD). After installation is complete, be sure that the ADMINISTRATOR account has the password of CIS130. (If your groups OS does not have an ADMINISTRATOR account, create an ADMINISTRATOR profile) Write up a brief summary of the installation process, make sure to note each step in the installation checklist.
Part C: Configuration
Individual Exercise - Create a User Account on your groups PC, or an individual Profile if your OS version does not have accounts. This local login account should only have normal USER privileges and should have its own unique user settings (desktop, My Documents, etc.) Your last name (or the first 5 characters of it) will be your Username. You may use whatever password you like, but be sure to include it in your write-up so that the instructor can test your account.
Customize your desktop and user settings. Write a description of HOW you set up your user account, and include a screen shot showing your individualized user settings.
